Three Passes Trek, Nepal - Gokyo, Ngozumpa Tse, and Renjo Pass - Ep. 4
The finals days 15 - 19 of our 19-day Three Passes hike. Ngozumpa Tse is a peak similar to Gokyo Ri, but lies 7km north at Lake V. Ngozumpa is more central in the glacial outflow and has sweeping views of Cho Oyu and Everest. We only saw other one person at the lake that day, and had the mountain to ourselves. This was the highlight of the Three Passes Trek for both of us.

Day 1 - 7 of our 19 day hike. The approach portion of the Three Passes Trek in Nepal covering from Lukla to Chukhung. We did not use a guide or porter for this trip in April 2023. We took the highline route from Namche Bazaar to Pangboche (via Phortse) to stay off the EBC trail avoid crowds. Highly recommend this option with spectacular views and quiet trail. Beautiful vid! Would you share your itinerary?
Day 0 Arrive in Kathmandu Day 1 Bus to Ramechapp @ 2am; Fly to Lukla @ 9am, end at Monjo Day 2 Monjo to Namche Bazaar Day 3 Acclimization Day - Hillary Viewpoint / Khunde Peak Day 4 Namche Bazaar to Phortse Day 5 Phortse to Pangboche Day 6 Pangboche to Dingboche - (very short day, was feeling sick) Day 7 Dingboche to Chukhung Day 8 Acclimization Day - Chukhung Ri & Chukhung Tse Day 9 Rest Day in Chukhung Day 10 Chukhung to Lobuche (Kongma La Pass) Day 11 Lobuche to EBC and back to Gorak Shep Day 12 Kala Patthar and then to Lobuche Day 13 Lobuche to Dzongla Day 14 Dzongla to Gokyo (Cho La Pass) Day 15 Ngozumpa Tse Day 16 Rest day in Gokyo Day 17 Goyko to Lungden (Renjo Pass) Day 18 Lungden to Namche Bazaar Day 19 Namche Bazaar to Lukla Day 20 Fly out to Ramechapp, bus to Kathmandu Be sure to add in a few flexible days before/after your flight to Lukla to account for a couple of sick-days during the hike, or a delayed flight! We had a originally booked our return flight from Lukla for day 21, and were easily able to get it bumped up to day 19.
Thanks very much, do you see a possibility to cut the trek a bit short by going from Dzonglha to Dingboche and back to Bamche Bazaar.
@@kl-ke9ec Seems like you are planning a clockwise loop? The would cut out Everest Base Camp from your trip if you depart directly from Dzongla. If you are doing counterclockwise, I'd recommend going 1 step further and departing directly from Gokyo instead of Dzongla. Cho La Pass and the Gokyo Lakes were spectacular, and I highly recommend seeing them! Plus this would keep the hike a loop, so you don't hike out the same Dingboche/Pangeboche valley you ascended in
@@HTTravels yes I was going to do clockwise because there number of threads emotioned it would have better view of the lakes, however I'm taking your advice to do counterclockwise instead, do you think by not going to EBC it would be More comfortable to make a 14 days trip?
@@kl-ke9ec It is a nice view of the lakes over Gokyo from Renjo Pass, but I think you could cut that and do Gokyo Ri instead. The counterclockwise loop has a more gradual ascent up the Dingboche/Pangeboche side, which is better for acclimatization too. That Dingboche side was was spectacular, I would prefer spending time in that valley rather than the Thame valley (which I found quite barren and boring compared to the rest of the trail).
hey! how many hours did it take to hike from namche bazaar to phortse, and from phortse to pangboche? Is it possible to combine them in one day? was originally planning to hike from namche to pangboche via the usual ebc route but the high line route looks good!
Total of 5-6 hrs for Namche to Phortse (including lunch stop in Mongla). Phortse to Pangeboche was quick 5km - only a 2-3hrs walking. Combining these was our original plan, but I was feeling the elevation and spent an extra day to acclimatize. Highly recommend the high-line route over the standard path along the valley bottom. Gorgeous views all the way along, and the trail was much MUCH quieter.
@@HTTravels sounds great, thanks for the info!☺
beautiful vlog. may i know which camera u used?
Thanks! It's mostly a Sony a6400 with 18-135mm lens, with a few GoPro Hero10 shots thrown in as well.

Nice video. Would you call this a class 4 hike?
Class 3 - only requires some hand usage. The only exposure was the short ridge crossing at 02:35
@@HTTravels ok. Thank you. Thats not bad. I assume you started at the Wilcox Pass trailhead, correct? How many miles/km was the round trip?
@@hiking1213 Roundtrip from the Wilcox Pass trailhead was about 12km with 950m gain
beautiful !
Did you guys go from Dragnag to Gokyo lake on the same day???
We did Dzongla to Gokyo in one day, only stopping in Dragnag for lunch
@@HTTravels thanks brother,,,,
We just discovered you today and we've watched all 3 EBC episodes. Looking forward for the next one! ❤️
WOW Beautiful trip for the Best views of this volcano de fuego !! Thanks for the video and B Safe !! 😅😅😊😊
Epic as per, what time of year was this April/ May?
April 4 - 24, was nice balance between the cold winter and rainy summer. Only had 2-3 rainy afternoons during the entire hike, none of which lasted more than a couple hours
Images magnifiques, montagnes superbes, quel beau spectacle... Merci à vous
Awesome! R there marks to show the way to Phortse?
I don't recall any signage, but the trail was very clear and a map would likely be all you need
A general map of Everest? Oso, at the passes, were there other people trekking and were there signages? What were the daylight hours? When is the next video?
@@Ilsan-5m25fks A topographic map with the hiking trails. We used the basic AllTrails map, and it was more than enough. There is no explicit signage on the trail, but the path was well defined and not difficult to follow. Plenty of daylight hours in April (6am to 8pm). There were far fewer people on the passes than on the EBC trail - perhaps 10 groups of hikers a day. Next video is already out on my channel.
Awesome. Tq I meant 3rd video, i hv already watched 1 n 2.
@@Ilsan-5m25fks The third video is out now ua-cam.com/video/WOQvQwEjqFI/v-deo.html
Thank you for your VDO this route is very very beautiful. On May 2024 I will go to Everest 3 pass trek.
Great video!!
Thanks for visiting through phortse village
Fantastic video broda!!! Can't wait to check out more of your channel!! Anyway to contact you? I have a few questions about the climb, much rather do it solo like y'all. Cheers!
bravo! 12:36 is an awesome shot
Amazing! How long was the round trip?
It took about 10hrs round trip (15km, 1100m), with plenty of breaks and a good chunk of time on the summit
Wow, how did you know the path to fuego? Is it well marked? Did u experience any problems in finding a place to put the tent?
The Fuego trail was very well marked, and finding the start of it was straightforward with a basic mapping app like AllTrails. It wasn't too busy when we went, so finding an empty tent spot wasn't hard. However, a company guide did come over and say that we were in their spot, but it was okay because they had a small group that day and weren't using it. They were very friendly and invited us over to the campfire that evening.
Amazing video!! What time of the year did you guys visit?
Thanks! We visited January 14 - 17, 2023
I am not familiar with the name "snow peak" but assume it is the traverse between south and north Burstall passes? I certainly looks like it. If it is do you know how it got it's name.? In the 80,s it was just a high piont between the Spray and the Palliser. nice video
I believe the traverse you are referring to is the informally named 'Burstall Pass Peak.' Snow Peak is the summit just west of Mt Birdwood (GPS 50.772713, -115.386115). It is on the north side of the northern Burstall Pass.
OK thanks. this clears up some geography for me
Definitely an incredibly gorgeous trail! Great that you can grab snacks at the teahouse too.
so awesome
Amazing what's camera you used for photos and video?
Sony a6400 with 18-135mm lens
*_Hello... at the beginning of the video I was amazed by the natural panorama of the mountains which really tempted me to go there, Mt Athabasca does provide beauty, but only climbers who have the skills as rock climbers are worthy of climbing it..... Nice to meet you. Rudy Outdoor Tutorial from Indonesia_* 👣⛰🌋🏔🏕💯👌👍👏🤝🙏
Great video
Another excellent video!
I did the onion last week and I think I should’ve done this one instead. It gives much better view on bow lake and the waterfalls. Oh well…. Next time as I come back to visit again. Do you think this hike is easier than the onion?
The Onion is a gorgeous hike too, don't regret it! Jimmy Jr is a much shorter day (easier in physical effort), but less clear trail/routefinding. We lost the trail through the trees and had to bushwhack for a bit. Other than that, Jimmy Jr was very similar in terms of scrambling difficulty - no exposure to be concerned over.
Good Gravy. I know this generation loves to overdramatize things but come on! Abbot afton is a nice little hike though. Bear… 😂😂. Yeah.. grew up in bc… saw them once a week, a lot closer than that. Don’t carry bear spray… then again I don’t spend all my time trying to make a 5 hour hike look like k2 and show all the same footage over and over from the same spot… funny though… like you didn’t progress for 3 hours!
Wow that was awsome and the bears omg
Cinematography is in a league of its own here. Not sure if you had a second person filming you while scrambling up and down or you took the pains to do it yourself but it's a world-class video that deserves to be seen on a large screen. I am not new to steep and long-distance hiking in Canada but scrambling with exposure is not for me yet.
Great shots. Really captures the incline at the summit.
Hey love the videos! Where did you get the trail map for this hike? Cant find it anywhere
There is no trail map, pieced together the route through other people's trip reports. The first half (up until 1:33 in the video) used the ACC Bow Hut approach trail, which should be on published trail maps.
@HT Travels thank you appreciate it 👍
Great vedio, how long did it take you folks to complete?
Approximately 8 hrs, although that includes time spent waiting for sunset and plenty of breaks!
You look like the pig
he visto muchos videos para animarme a subir y este me ha gustado bastante.
it is called The Fortress. NOT Fortress Peak...))
Videographer is A1 - clear as as if we were there !
Looks like mother nature. Is giving you. All the fire you need up there. You have alot of nurve.
De lujo
What peak was this? North? Or middle?
This was the true summit (south peak) at 51.6250325, -116.4334662.
Beautiful video. Well done. Brings back great memories. I hiked to Rockbound in 1968. I caught 3 different types of trout-brookies, cuts, and rainbows. I also saw a wolverine running along the shore. Memories.
You should consider selling this masterpiece to Nat Geo or Disco Discovery Channel
awesome video man! very well put together. The McDs hack is so jokes! I'm definitely doing that too when I climb in April!
